The most common ant in the New England area which causes home owners to seek professional help is the Carpenter Ant - (Camponotus spp.) They are the most noticeable of ants in and around the home being large and usually blackish, perhaps with some faintly grayish bands on the abdomen. Other carpenter ants may have some reddish or purplish coloration to the thorax (middle body part). Foraging workers have large mandibles which can give a powerful bite. They vary greatly in size, depending on their function, from 1/4 to 1/2 inch (minor workers), 1/2 to 3/4 inch major workers and 3/4 to 1 inch long winged reproductives. Most carpenter ants seen inside your home are the wingless minor workers that make up most of the colony. They are black medium sized ants. Carpenter ants can cause serious damage to wood by excavating galleries, which somewhat resembles the work of termites but can be distinguished by their very clean sandpapered appearance. Sawdust or wood shavings known as frass found in and around the home, is usually an indication of a nest being excavated nearby, but very often it goes unnoticed being deposited inside a wall void. Carpenter ants do not eat wood, but they rip it apart with their front mandibles for nesting. Moisture is a desirable condition for ant colonies, and wood which has been water damaged is a prime target for new nests, although perfectly dry and sound wood is also excavated. Galleries are cut with the wood grain and major workers then carry the developing larvae from the outside nest (around 30,000 ants) to the new satellite colonies in nearby homes. These secondary nests can have up to 3,000 workers.
Termite Control – The Best Type of Termite Treatment
Termite Workers with Termite Soldier inside Damaged Wood
The best termite treatments today use an odorless, non-repellent, low toxicity liquid that termites can’t detect (unlike the older type liquids that were repellent and termites could circumvent). It is applied to the soil, next to your exterior foundation, all the way around your house. Think of it as a liquid baiting system, but with this type of treatment, the termites don’t have to find and then eat any hidden bait, they just have to pass by it in the soil and they will die a few days later. We use soil injection rods to do this part of the treatment. Since the termite workers can’t detect this new liquid treatment, they keep tunneling through it. They then get it on their bodies and end up carrying the treatment back to the main colony. It then spreads from termite to termite by contact and quickly eliminates the entire termite colony.
House mouse – Field mice
Most common small rodent found within structures, particularly in fall and winter!
Description: Mice and rats are referred to as Rodents (from the Latin rodere meaning ‘to gnaw need’.) Their need to gnaw constantly is necessary to control the size of their incisor (front) teeth. Mice can chew through anything softer than their teeth. Mice teeth can grow up to 5 inches a year. They often turn their destructive instincts to pipe work, structural building materials, electrical cables, thus they are the number 1 cause of structural fires. Mice are prolific breeders, producing six to ten litters continuously throughout the year.
